(sola)s at the Slusher’s

30 08 2010

This thursday night we will take a break from our normal routine to fellowship together and watch the USM vs. USC football game. Everyone (including those who attend William Carey, Jones, PRCC, or who could care less about football) is invited over to the Slusher’s house to watch the game and hang out. Snacks and drinks will be provided, but please eat before you come.

The game starts at 6:30 p.m. CT, so come on over around 6:15 p.m. or show up when you can.

If you would like to meet at the West Campus and caravan over to the Slusher’s, meet in the student parking lot by 6:00 p.m. (For directions to West Campus, go here). Since there is limited parking space, this is a good idea. We will have a van that you can load up and ride together in, but it will be leaving promptly at 6:10 p.m. So if this is your plan, don’t be late!

If you want to meet us at the Slusher’s house, they live at 27 Buckingham St., Hattiesburg, MS 39402. If you have any questions, call us at 450-3065. See you Thursday.

God, Neighbor, and the Questions We Ask

28 08 2010

So we’re in the middle of a series called INVEST: Your Life is Currency. In this series we are seeking to ask questions concerning how we are investing our lives. How are our time, money, relationships, and talents being used? Are they going toward kingdom advancement? Or are they being wasted on this temporal life?

I just finished listening to Dr. Moore’s sermon A Letter From Jericho: God, Neighbor, and the Questions We Ask and it falls perfectly in line with our current series. It exposes how we often seek to justify our selfishness and how we fail to truly live the life that Christ calls us to. This talk is worth a listen…or two.

INVEST week 2: Your Time is Currency

25 08 2010

Last week we began a series called “INVEST: Your Life Is Currency”. In this study we are exploring the reality that our life is full of capital – we all have time, money, relationships, and talents; and we all must spend them on something. The question, then, is, what are we investing our lives in? How are we spending the capital we have?

Jesus taught in Matthew 6:19-24 that we should store up (literally “treasure”) heavenly treasures, and not earthly treasures. In other words, we should invest our lives in things that are eternal and not in things that are temporal and fleeting. He summed it up in verse 33 when he said, “Seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness.”  So the question for us through this series is, “Am I seeking God’s kingdom or another kingdom?” And the way to discern the answer to this question is to investigate how we are making use of our time, money, relationships, and talents.

This week we will explore the capital of time. How are you investing the time you are allotted each day? James 4:14 reminds us that “Life is a mist that appears for a little time and then vanishes.” Life is short; we best not waste the little time we have. The apostle Paul challenged the Ephesians to make “the best use of the time,” and this is my prayer for us as well – that our time would be spent on what is most important. Answering how we do this and what this looks like is what we will explore Thursday night. See you then.

Fall Schedule

6 08 2010

INVEST a new series this fall

3 08 2010

August 19th will be our first (sola)s gathering for the fall. We are excited about the new semester and seeing many of you for the first time in 3 months! We’re also pumped to see some new faces. We believe God has big things in store for us this year!

To get the school year rolling, we are jumping into a 5 week series called INVEST: your life is currency. This series will explore the question, “What are you investing your life in?” Are you investing in things that are fleeting and temporal, or things that have eternal value? We will specifically explore the areas of time, money, relationships and talents. This series should be a challenging, but helpful reminder to seek first the kingdom of God and to not waste our lives.

We hope to see you all on August 19th,

Grace and Peace.

And as always, use the guide attached to this post to help you in your reading of Galatians so that you can come ready to discuss. Grace and Peace.

Study 9

a sweet way to read the word

1 07 2010

In Psalm 34:8 we are invited to “taste and see that the Lord is good!” So here’s a question for you: How do we taste and see? David answers this for us: “I will meditate on your precepts and fix my eyes on your ways. I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word…How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth” (Ps. 119:15-16, 103).

We taste of how good God is through a healthy diet of his word.  But if I’m being real honest, often times my intake of God’s word is sporadic, unbalanced and unhealthy – kind of like my two year old’s eating habits.  Melanie and I try to get that lil dude to eat healthy, but he only likes cheesy chicken rolls ups, spaghetti, yogurt, or sweets.  There is no balance to his diet. And this is very similar to the way many of us read God’s word – it’s not that we’re not reading it; We’re just not balanced and healthy with our intake of it.  We focus too much on certain sections and neglect others. Sound familiar?

So if you find yourself relating to this post, I have a challenge for you. A friend of mine told me about a new Bible reading system (attached below) that he and his wife recently began to use, and it sounds really cool.  He swears by it.  The system uses ten lists, and you read one chapter from each list per day (don’t freak out! 10 chapters a day really isn’t that many). The lists comprise different sections of Scripture, so you end up reading from all over the Bible. The point is to read Scripture in a balanced manner; you’re letting the whole counsel of God speak to you.  My friend says that as you begin to follow this method, the interconnectedness of Scripture comes alive. You begin to see the Bible as a connected story – how the OT points forward to the NT, and how the NT is constantly referencing and answering the OT.

After listening to my friend tell me about it, and reading the article I’m attaching to this post, I decided it was worth giving it a go. The other aspect of this method I really like is that if you miss a day (which you will inevitably do!) you don’t have to play catch up like you do with other reading plans.  With this system you simply pick up where you left off.

Maybe you’re already trucking through a Bible reading plan and loving it: praise God! But if not, then consider joining me in trying out this new method. At the end of the day, what I want for myself and for you is to taste and see that the Lord is good.
